Honestly speaking, I’m not a science buff. Back in high school, science subjects like maths and physics were a big headache for me. However, as a native of Chengdu, an inland city in the southwest of China, I’ve always been fascinated with the ocean, and marine biology is an area of science I’d like to learn more about.

I vaguely remember I watched a documentary series on marine life for the first time at 7 or 8. At the time, I was excited to find that the underwater world is a place of colours and wonders. However, it wasn’t until three years ago that my interest in marine biology was kindled. It all started with an award-winning documentary, Blue Planet. Seeing an array of underwater creatures took my breath away. Some have dazzling colours; some have weird habits; some are ferocious, while others are friendly and gentle. A scene in which a marine biologist dives into the ocean and has an intimate encounter with beautiful sea creatures, like a sea turtle, would always capture my attention.

So, that’s how I’ve got to know marine biology. I know it’s too late to pursue a career in this field. Anyway, I still enjoy exploring more about the subject. In fact, I’ve watched dozens of documentaries related to it so far. They’ve expanded my horizons. Maybe I can call myself an amateur marine biologist now. Probably, in the near future, I'll travel to a remote island off the coast, and by then, I'll apply what I've learnt from these documentaries.
